Most Moms Think their Overweight Kids are Normal
According to a survey carried out by the marketing research company NPD Group it has been found that most moms of overweight children don’t think that their kids are overweight. More than three mothers out of five children think that their child’s weight is normal. But yes four out of five mothers of overweight girls felt that their daughters were not able to wear stylish clothes and the choice of clothing was also limited. It was also found that four out of five overweight boys and five out of six overweight girls require buying clothes which are meant for older children or for adults.
The survey involved asking the mothers whether they felt their child was overweight, this question was succeeded by asking the weight and height of the child. Only 13% of the mothers admitted that their child was overweight but out of the total number of mothers surveyed 34% of the children were overweight.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention an estimated 30% of the American children were overweight by BMI standards. The CDC uses different standards other than what is used for adults since the body fat of boys and girls change as they grow.
Everybody knows that adults find it extremely difficult to loose weight and then to maintain weight loss. Due to this a lot of emphasis is being laid on the tackling childhood obesity, which also looked at as the root cause of adult obesity.
But with the parents not realizing the gravity of the issue it is turning out to be a lot harder to address this issue than what was anticipated. Many a times even the doctor don’t raise this issue with the parents as they fear being subjected to parental wrath. |
